DroneBetter wanted me to post this for OEIS reasons. lazily constructed 384-omino that yields presumably infinite novelty.

Code: Select all

x = 45, y = 42, rule = B3/S23

Anyways, we can show that any glider-constructible pattern has a polyomino predecessor. Proof sketch: Note the following polyominoes lead to a block and glider:

Code: Select all

x = 45, y = 19, rule = B3/S23
o$o2bo$4o$2b2o$2b4o$4b2o$5b2o$5b4o$7b2o$8b2o31b3o$8b2o29b5o$9b2o28b2o

14bob4o$13b4o11b2o3b2o$15b2o11b2o!
By using the dense overpopulation connectors shown, we can connect a block-predecessor with many glider-predecessors as long as they are sufficiently well-separated. Thus we can produce any monophase slow salvo, which are known to be universal.

As a corollary, we can make a polyomino predecessor for e.g. Patterns/HashLife/Eventful/ruler.mc (with the p24 glider guns replaced by the century hassler version), which provably does not stabilize according to the proposed definition in A383874.

From the last CC 90° Glider reflector I posted and as the output lane crosses the input lane,
I searched some possible collisions and found theses special cases :

A simple still life that would eat an acorn cleanly. Not really notable, just that I'm not sure if it's known.

Pi eater

Known? Surely, so simple and small it is.

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 12, rule = B3/S23

Period-24 glider streams have a crystal that forms on a blinker.

Above is a typical formation of the crystal, along with a switching reaction that allows it to decay like the beehive crystal, albeit with supporting eater 1's necessary to stabilize it.

What is most notable yet unfortunate is that once it burns down, a single rogue blinker is what stops it from being immediately reburnable. I could not find a way to destroy this tough blinker other than constructing bespoke high-period sparkers for each example, since the whole thing is p312+168n and gcf(168, 312) = 24 is way too low of a period to safely eat the blinker.

Here is a p1152 oscillator as demonstration:

This is actually false! Using a different spark position it can be eaten with an even period as low as 4:

Nice find! But is there a way to get a glider out at the top of the crystal chain, short of rebuilding some awkward unlikely bait thing after every cycle?

I'm not sure about potential glider outputs, but after trying some manual bait placements I came across a(n unrelated) reaction that flips a loaf:

Well ... we've got eater3s (the non-drifty kind) and other mechanisms that can flip a loaf back again.

Are there any known mechanisms that can coax any kind of drifty signal out of a loaf flip, while flipping it back? I feel like there have been a good number of drifty Silk search results in the last year and change, that I haven't successfully kept track of.

I believe the only mechanism capable of flipping the loaf back is the loaf spin:

Code: Select all

x = 17, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
4bo$3bobo$3bobo$b3ob2o$o9b2o$b3ob2o3b2o$3bob2o2$9b2o$8bo2bo$6bo2bobo$
6bo3bo$6bo6b2o$13bobo$15bo$15b2o!
The stable version is clearly too close though, but a periodic version could work.

It is definitely known - see this post from dvgrn, which includes an email from 1997. The email includes:
The most interesting such pattern I found produces a symmetric pair of LWSSs as well as a symmetric induction-coil still life (itself the result of a symmetric pair of B-heptominoes).

The hive five reaction can support this p72 wick based on two blockers hassling R-pentomino:

I believe I found something interesting. The first to be found in symmetry C1. There's only one other on Catagolue and that's for symmetry D4_+1. The object is fully formed at generation 1081. The soup stabilizes at generation 1190.

The Object:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 8, rule = B3/S23

The soup:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23

Note that in future you can use Catagolue tags to provide a link to an apgcode's object page - [catagolue]xs23_cko0oggka53zx346
[/catagolue].

Congratulations on making your first discovery using apgsearch! Sadly, new still life discoveries using apgsearch are rarely considered interesting, unless either:
  • The still life is unusually large or small for a new discovery - e.g long^9 snake or cloverleaf interchange.
    I would say that 'unusually small' means 16 cells, since there are 62 still lifes which have yet to occur naturally, and that 'unusually large' means >40 cells, since the omnibus, the largest natural still life with any form of frequency, has 40 cells.
  • The soup for the still life leads to a reduction in its synthesis costs - see Tutorials/Glider syntheses. Sadly, in this case, the still life already has a 9G synthesis, and the soup does not appear to have a reaction that could be assembled in <9G.
  • The still life is itself notable - if you found, say, a natural 31.4 or 7x9 eater, that would definitely be considered notable.
Note that still life discoveries are not automatically added to your user page unless they have >= 30 cells, but you can see who the discoverer of an apgcode is by visiting https://catagolue.hatsya.com/attribute/<apgcode>/<rule>/<symmetry>, and if you have found one of the first 20 occurrences, the apgcode is shown on your user page. I went through it with a script, but I found no other new discoveries.

Don't be discouraged, though - I have only been searching for 6 months, and I have already discovered still lifes with 35 and 37 cells, as well as occurrences of very rare p4 and p5 oscillators - eventually, you will find something interesting out there!
