The block can be replaced by a glider from either direction, although the cleanup is a bit messier. The whole thing can be done completely one-sided from 5 gliders, although there is probably a 1 glider cleanup somewhere that might reduce it to 4.

It turns out the same mechanism is already used by one of the 4-glider integral syntheses - a glider into a B-heptomino makes a pi + debris block that cleans up the back, and the B-heptomino's first block just happens to be in the right place. I had already used that for the optimal synthesis of integral eating integral, but had overlooked it for eater eating integral, so this brought to light an obvious synthesis improvement that had been overlooked. Thanks! (EDIT: This, in turn, also improves 27 additional related syntheses).
