The way to find this kind of thing out is to run the identifier script from the H-to-G thread, and then search for the systematic name that the script gives. In this case, SE5T12 has been around for a long time -- it was found by simeks in mid-2015.

Well, by itself this kind of information is not very useful. Without the blocks or another way to delete forming beehives, there is no gun.

It might be useful to know, for example if one would like to stop a working glider gun at a certain time by hitting and deleting the blocks with gliders:

Code: Select all

x = 67, y = 22, rule = B3/S23

18b2o8bo5bo3b2o$18b2o8bo3bob2o4bobo$28bo5bo7bo$29bo3bo$30b2o!
Then you'll need to know when to send the two gliders, to make sure the number of output gliders is correct.

While I was playing around, I noticed that the Gosper Glider Gun produces 1 glider without the blocks. Useful?

Sure -- we could do that. It's not clear why we would need multiple guns or the confusing mess, though.

See this blog post by biggiemac, for example. Scroll down to the fifth animation, in the "Or does it?" section.

Behold, OtismO's GrowShip.

Thank You.

Cheers !

EDIT by dvgrn: Heh, this had me puzzled for a while -- I was sure I'd seen prior art for this combination, but couldn't remember where. Turns out it's because this pattern is duplicated from a previous post -- the prior art was also by otismo!

Is this 0° +4hd reflector known ?
Add a Jujub Reflector and you get a 180° +4hd reflector

Well I knew it could be constructed, but did not feel like pushing it here, for some strange reason there is many 180deg reflectors that showed up lately, it might be time to make a pattern that contains them all, and look for the "smallest" possible for each possible offset.

Where can I find a collection of stable reflectors in order to avoid useless posts ?

Is this 0° +4hd reflector known ?
Add a Jujub Reflector and you get a 180° +4hd reflector

How did you find these patterns?

A minor variant of the 4-lane glider shifter was known and posted. (These are based on a recent G-to-R by yoleo.)

Yes, I started with yoleo's G-to-x and tried manually to find something.

Fourteener reaction...
This is posted in Unsure Discoveries. Is that because you're not sure if this is a discovery or not?

The key reaction is this one:

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 10, rule = B3/S23
4b2o$3bo2bo$4b2o3$bo$ob2o$o2bo$b3o$2bo!
There are many hundreds of soups catalogued -- catagolued? -- here. It's generally worth putting the output object that you're looking at into the Object page of Catagolue, to go and look at how common or rare the object really is, and look through the ways that it commonly forms.

In this case, that particular formation method didn't show up in the first ten C1 soups, so it's not super common. I think some of those ten converged on the same final stages of the formation sequence, but I didn't see that particular beehive-plus-active-blob.

I'd expect that key reaction to show up somewhere in Catagolue's collection of fourteener soups, but without continuing the survey I don't know that for sure. It looks like there are some symmetries where Catagolue has stopped collecting soups for fourteeners because they're too common -- not sure what the thresholds are, but numbers near 100 and 200 I think are signs that Catagolue has filled up its quota... not sure about the "150", which also looks suspiciously like a round number but maybe that's a coincidence.

It looks like a fourteener forms naturally in a lot of different ways -- as an index fossil for a pi plus honey farm combination, for example:

Code: Select all

x = 19, y = 18, rule = B3/S23
