The Life Lexicon is a comprehensive glossary of terms pertaining to Conway's Game of Life and related cellular automata. It was founded in 1997 by Stephen Silver and retroactively dedicated in memoriam Dieter Leithner, distilling information from several pattern collections and an earlier glossary compiled by Alan Hensel. The lexicon was maintained by Silver until 2006, then lay dormant for a decade before being taken over and maintained by Dave Greene and David Bell.
The lexicon source file is maintained as plain text with its own minimalistic markup for specifying cross-references and ASCII representations of patterns. Single- and multi-page HTML distributions of the lexicon are generated automatically from this source.
The current instantiation of the lexicon is actively maintained and available both online and in the documentation of Golly.
