It's called "the third oscillator in the series after pulsar and quasar".

If we applied an arbitrary name to that one, then we'd just need a name for the fourth oscillator in the series (which is also shown in the quasar article)... and so on. Have to stop somewhere, and the place where we've already stopped is a perfectly good place.

EDIT: it's a "bigger quasar" or "quasar 2", if you must -- but a name for that pattern is really just a solution in search of a problem.

I think a good place to stop would be the third oscillator in the series. The third would have an (unique) name, and the fourth could be called "bigger [name of third oscillator in series]".
Edit: I do not like "quasar 2".

Besides the fact that 30P5H2V0 is the only name of the spaceship that is in common use, here is a reason why it's likely a bad idea to apply a seemingly "meaningful" name to a single spaceship:

Both 30P5H2V0 and 34P5H2V0 "have a house at front", and there are more.
The proposed name is bad, because it is misleading. It suggests a specific kind of uniqueness that is not there.

Pentadecathlon ID descriptions, such as 30P5H2V0 or 34P5H2V0, might not be the best possible names. However, such descriptors have at least three objective advantages -
(a) They are descriptive: you can immediately know the minimum population (30), period (5), horizontal displacement (2), vertical displacement (0).
(b) They are honest: there is no implication of some kind of "visual feature" that in the end fails to be unique to the spaceship in question.
(c) They are commonly used as a convenient way to refer to patterns. They are fairly short, and do not have delimiters in them (hence easy to search).

Even the word 'glider' can mislead, when you go beyond B3/S23. Other small common spaceships are also frequently described as gliders.
In comparison, 5P4H1V1 essentially says "a period-4 c/4 diagonal spaceship with minimum population 5".

In general, sequential numbering in pattern names is more confusing, not less. (Also, by the existing convention you would need 'p41' rather than 'P41'.)

What is wrong with the existing Pentadecathlon ID descriptors? 246P41 refers to a 246-cell p41 oscillator. 204P41 refers to a 204-cell p41 oscillator.

This composer forms with Schumann:

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 8, rule = B3/S23
b2o$obo$bo3$bo$3o$bo!
I should have named this one "Brahms" considering the existence of Schumann.

I propose this composer to be called "Brahms."

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 6, rule = B3/S23

You shall be renamed to "Blockx."

I think Tawal's new H-to-fishhook needs a name. I also think it is notable enough to go on the wiki.

People on Discord have suggested "Go", in reference to the board being 19×19 and the other p19 already being a game. Period1GliderGun seems to be indifferent on naming it, saying it's a valid option but won't commit to it being final.

"Go" is a good name. Let's go with it. (abysmal pun intended)
(My prior ambivalence was because I was considering something like "p19 honey farm hassler" as a nod to the p23 honey farm hassler, but there will probably be more p19 honey farm hasslers in the future.)

EDIT: I've decided that "go" is too general; see my next post.

Or maybe "goban", in reference to the Go board itself.

Does the following wick have an established name?

Code: Select all

x = 25, y = 2, rule = B3/S23
2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2obo$ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2ob2o!
I always thought of it as a "coiled snake".

It would be nice to have a name for it when describing Keith Amling's c/3 greystretchers and new 3c/6 wickstretchers.

That's a good point. To avoid cluttering up this thread further, I vote that it be named "goban."

That is correct and I'm stupid. The wick was actually by May13. (I don't know why I thought it was by JP21.)
