There's nothing very surprising in newcomers making new threads.

Maybe they're seeing the success of B35/S23 and trying to copy it? Just a guess.

And no, I will not think B35/S23 as a succesful rule before it develops reusable signal circuits. Even if my opinion does not matter, I would not approve of that LifeWiki article.

There are a few different points here mixed together.
First, it is meaningless to describe a rule as "successful" or not. Some rules are more explored than other rules. Different rules may be explored in different ways / different directions.

Finding reusable technology (e.g. glider reflectors, duplicators) in B35/S23 would indeed be a notable discovery, which could be mentioned in the wiki article.

However, I don't really understand it, when someone wants to make reusable technology a requirement. Judging a rule by the amount of known technology is inherently biased. (Over)focusing on technology misses other ways how a rule may happen to be interesting and notable.

Gliders and glider syntheses are still interesting even if there's no known glider gun.
High-period agars are still interesting even if the rule is exploding.
High-period oscillators are still interesting even if growth is impossible.

Maybe if we force the number of on cells in the 2 rows to be even? Or just have a 3x86 where 2 cells are always off. Or just make a 3x85, where the last bit gets ignored. Adding a 5x52 or 5x51 symmetry would be good. I don't see why 8x32 searching is useful.

This seems like it could be a fun game, similar to the old game of "make this into a still life." I'm not sure what that says about the difficulty of the problem. An SAT solver might be able to handle it quickly, despite the hardness of the problem in theory. I'm not sure how to set up a requirement that all parts of the pattern are connected, though.

With enough usable software tools for finding, collecting and exploring known components and reactions, there could be seemingly totally ridiculous patterns involving seemingly unrelated parts interacting in unexpected ways. Something like an engineered spaceship involving a random-looking dense still life, which is painstakingly constructed by colliding dozens of gliders, only to be hit later by a loafer and converted into some reaction which could not be initiated in any simpler known way (given the restrictions), and somehow the whole "build a dense still life and hit it with a loafer" enterprise happens to be the single best known way to solve the problem.

Long^7 is "stupidly long", and long^8 is "ridiculously long". In the linked thread I also suggested that long^9 be called "ludicrously long".

I think we should make the rest canon as well. The Conway Life community is known for its expressiveness and flowery, evocative jargon, after all.

How about we start by making long^4 "remarkably long"? That's a fairly modest description that fits well with "very long" and "extra long". I'd also propose long^5 to be "terribly long", and long^6 "absurdly long".

People do write walkthroughs for creating various large patterns now and then, but those are usually talking to people who know all the strange jargon already, so might be jumping in too much at the deep end.

Looking at the Wiki for the game of life and seeing massive structures and jargon terms was a bit intimidating, but- I wanted to share something I'm a little bit proud of!

I was going to write a brief "rough draft" of an intro page, but I am admittedly not anywhere near an expert and multiple, hyperlinked posts/pages would probably work best.

I think this might be a case where it's very useful to be "not anywhere near an expert". It's sometimes hard for the experts to even know what to explain, or to explain anything clearly without using jargon that only other experts can understand anyway.

The purpose of the blog post is to have something out there with a title that will read well on Hacker News and Slashdot and Reddit and so on, for people who don't know RCT jargon. Which is ... the entire population of the world, minus about fifty people.
