Earlier this year I published the construction of x-in-a-row (3,12) oblique spaceships using copies of cloverleaf. Below is a review of two examples with annotation:

Here comes some simple mathematical modelling. A pair of cloverleaf capable of pushing is annotated by a vector that starts from the center of "follower", ends at the center of "driver", and has three components (Δx, Δy, Δt) describing the spatio-temporal differences between them. Any x-in-a-row spaceship can then be expressed as an ordered set of vectors. By program enumeration of cloverleaf interactions, a group of vectors have been collected. On the other hand, it is possible to write down necessary conditions for a chosen set of vectors to be a spaceship in the form of constraint formulae.

The two spaceships shown above have the same terminals for westbound T-ship, which gives two constraints:

ΣΔy = 5
2ΣΔx - ΣΔt = -95

With generous assistance from FWCamelship in private correspondence, an affirmative answer can be given to the question "Are there 4-in-a-row spaceships?". FWCamelship (EDIT: corrected attribution) found these 16 new spaceships:

I found a 5-in-a-row (6,24)c/870 spaceship:

Code: Select all

#C [(-33, 15, -106),(-33, 4, -114),(-33, -2, -42)]
#C [[ X 12 TRACK 6/870 24/870 ]]
x = 129, y = 23, rule = B3-jknr4ity5ijk6i8/S23-a4city6c7c

The displacement is (6,24), twice of the usual (3,12), because a period involves two T-ships instead of only one. It gives these two constraints:

ΣΔy = 17
2ΣΔx - ΣΔt = 64

There are 38 sets of vectors satisfying the formulae, the first half of which are:

Code: Select all

[(-31, 18, -109), (-28, -1, -73)]
[(-33, 12, -114), (-29, 5, -74)]
[(-32, 12, -118), (-30, 5, -70)]
[(-31, 11, -120), (-32, 6, -70)]
[(-34, 10, -100), (-33, 7, -98)]
[(-33, 10, -114), (-29, 7, -74)]

[(-34, 9, -116), (-28, 8, -72)]
[(-33, 9, -119), (-30, 8, -71)]
However, only the first one and its reverse imply working 4-in-a-row spaceships:

Code: Select all

Their speed (6,24)c/630 can be simplified to (3,12)c/315, reaching the lowest possible period of the series. The westbound T-ships inside both of them are just lucky enough to pass the second cloverleaf from left. Steric hindrance of cloverleaf is exactly the reason why other vector sets do not yield practical spaceships. Therefore, the constraint on vectors is a necessary but not sufficient condition for spaceship construction.

On a side note, the fifth xq795 in the last post ([(-30, 1, -9), (-31, 4, -18)]) and the sixth ([(-32, 1, -13), (-31, 4, -18)]) share a minimum population of 69 cells, but the latter is slightly wider. Both xq315 in this post share a minimum population of 86 cells and bounding box, but the latter has a smaller maximum population.

Re: 熠熠种花 - Glimmering Garden (B3-jknr4ity5ijk6i8/S23-a4city6c7c)

I am attempting to find the relationship between (unsimplified) period and displacement of an x-in-a-row oblique spaceship and the parameters ΣΔy and 2ΣΔx - ΣΔt. The displacement depends on the number of T-ships, with one T-ship corresponding to a (3,12) displacement, which implies an additional 12 to the ΣΔy. So it is easy to write

Number of T-ships is n_T = (7+ΣΔy)/12
Displacement is (3n_T, 12n_T)

Meanwhile, the period is linearly related to both the number of vectors n_V and number of T-ships n_T. There are examples posted above where n_V = 2, n_T = 1, p = 795; n_V = 2, n_T = 2, p = 630 (not simplified to 315); n_V = 3, n_T = 1, p = 1035; n_V = 3, n_T = 2, p = 870. Intuitively the period would then be p = 480 + 240n_V - 165n_T.

But how can I be sure that 2ΣΔx - ΣΔt is not involved? I modified the constraint to

ΣΔy = 5
2ΣΔx - ΣΔt = -95 + 240 = 145

There are 14×3!=84 sets of vectors satisfying the formulae, with the first 14 of which are:

Code: Select all

(-29, 5, -73),(-25, 0, -115),(-25, 0, -115)
(-30, 3, -98),(-26, 2, -94),(-25, 0, -115)
(-30, 3, -98),(-27, 2, -96),(-25, 0, -115)
(-30, 3, -98),(-28, 2, -109),(-25, 0, -104)
(-30, 3, -98),(-30, 2, -113),(-25, 0, -104)
(-30, 3, -98),(-31, 2, -115),(-25, 0, -104)
(-34, 3, -112),(-28, 1, -106),(-31, 1, -113)
(-26, 2, -94),(-28, 2, -109),(-28, 1, -106)
(-26, 2, -94),(-30, 2, -113),(-28, 1, -106)
(-26, 2, -94),(-31, 2, -115),(-28, 1, -106)
(-26, 2, -96),(-31, 2, -112),(-31, 1, -113)
(-27, 2, -96),(-28, 2, -109),(-28, 1, -106)
(-27, 2, -96),(-30, 2, -113),(-28, 1, -106)
(-27, 2, -96),(-31, 2, -115),(-28, 1, -106)
The first spaceship is (3,12)c/795; instead of p = 480 + 240×3 -165×1 = 1035, its period is smaller by 240.

Code: Select all

From ΣΔy = 5, 2ΣΔx - ΣΔt = -95; ΣΔy = 17, 2ΣΔx - ΣΔt = 64, there is an linear equation (2ΣΔx - ΣΔt) = (53*ΣΔy - 645)/4. To fix the period equation, introduce a difference d = (2ΣΔx - ΣΔt)-(53*ΣΔy - 645)/4, and deduct it from period to get p = 480 + 240n_V - 165n_T - d = 240n_V - (2ΣΔx - ΣΔt) - ΣΔy/2 + 445/2. It seems to be done here...

... except it is not. See excerpt of another batch of results:

Having n_V = 3, ΣΔy = 5, 2ΣΔx - ΣΔt = -95, the period is expected to be p = 240×3 - (-95) - 5/2 + 445/2 = 1035. However, there are 11×3! = 66 sets of vectors with (-14, 19, 55), and at least one of them makes a period-795 spaceship:

Code: Select all

Thus, some terms are still missing in the proposed period formula p = 240n_V - (2ΣΔx - ΣΔt) - ΣΔy/2 + 445/2.

The order of vectors in a spaceship appears written right-to-left, because the east terminal that emits T-ship(s) is regarded as the center. This is also the reason why a vector starts from "follower" instead of "driver". Going from east to west, the vector component Δx is negative (ranging from -35 to -7 for known ones). A "driver" located northeast of "follower" is noted with a positive Δy. And with the phase of "driver" behind "follower", Δt is negative.

While I was explaining these, it occurred to me that the sign of Δt might be a key to the period formula problem. There are three vectors with a large positive Δt: (-15, 32, 85), (-14, 19, 55) and (-32, 10, 118). The second one, (-14, 19, 55), was mentioned in the last post. Here is a hightly curved 6-in-a-row (3,12)c/1035 spaceship with (-15, 32, 85):

The proposed period formula gives 1995, two times 240 more than 1515, corresponding to the existence of (-15, 32, 85) and (-14, 19, 55). In these examples, each vector that is either (-15, 32, 85), (-14, 19, 55) or (-32, 10, 118) corresponds to a decrease of 240 in the period. Therefore, a straightforward fix for the formula p = 240n_V - (2ΣΔx - ΣΔt) - ΣΔy/2 + 445/2 would be not counting any of these three vectors in n_V.

Whoa, an extension to xq4_xnmkz0g0b98gxogz120l5531wtd5zxrrazx1 with two more escorting xq4_nmkz31 published at the end of year? Astounding!

That is in three ways I could see akin to the Life fireship: 1) a not quite "tagalong" to known spaceship; 2) a start to development of moving technology (puffers, rakes, etc) at the speed; 3) some resemblance to the 3c/20 technology. I built a backrake for xq315_0o88xg2h17z8tj657012yysi2ekc6k8y5g8gogzy4eq6ocsyw8s973y8s9472zy51363 in five minutes flat:

More notes on the oblique spaceship. I wrote a script to verify the collected group of vectors, which found a pair missing in the original post due to misidentification. The pairs that emits T-ships have the following vectors:

Code: Select all

There are two pairs emitting westbound T-ship. (-25, 9, -74) is the one that have been used in the constructions and calculations since November 30th, corresponding to the original constraints ΣΔy = 5, 2ΣΔx - ΣΔt = -95. The other one, (-33, 6, -68), corresponds to the alternative constraints ΣΔy = 13, 2ΣΔx - ΣΔt = -93; its larger positive ΣΔy makes it less productive than (-25, 9, -74), see for instance, no 4-in-a-row spaceship can be built from it. The constraint is also subject to the two adjustments seen so far:
1)Adding 12 to ΣΔy while adding 159 to 2ΣΔx - ΣΔt, therefore adding one T-ship to the cycle (affecting displacement and period);
2)Adding 240 to 2ΣΔx - ΣΔt, therefore deducting 240 to the period.

There are seven pairs emitting southbound T-ship, among which (-24, -8, -18) was the missing one. It has the same emission timing as (-28, -7, -24) due to a shared intermediate B-heptomino.

Interestingly, these are the only pairs that leave an extra object while moving. Some other pairs coming close to doing so are:

The extra product could not survive from the sparks. Testing also suggests that (-32, 9, -67), (-32, 9, -69) and (-35, -2, -13) are not suitable for two consecutive pushing reactions in 315 ticks as a stray butterfly woudl crash into cloverleaf.

This (-32, -4, -18) pair is even more unusual: it is a period-240 T-ship gun in ground state, only emitting no southbound T-ship upon pushing. However, its emission would have conflict with the only westbound T-ship that sets off displacement.

Hold on. Is a (3,12)c/75 spaceship possible? All copies of cloverleaf in such a spaceship would be perturbed every 75 ticks, and spinning in place for more cloverleaf periods (240 ticks) is not allowed, so there would be significantly different interactions.

Awesome! The triangular T-ship loop design is similar to the first (3,12)c/315 spaceship, but the upper right corner here is more complex and delicate as the timings between laying blinker, moving blinker and splitting T-ship are aligned perfectly with no room for adjustment.

It can be viewed as a much simpler analog to the Weekender distaff in Life without the need for a slow-salvo construction of the forward internal spaceship. I tried to find c/4 cloverleaf-moving reactions and got these:

They can give rise to a period-1464 spaceship. I noticed that the two cloverleaf-to-T converters in the patterns above have the output on the same lane, with the sideway-emitting one lagging behind by 21 ticks, which is unluckily not applicable due to parity:

Unrelated, this section was prepared some days ago. A review on diagonal Julia chains discovered some Julia shuttles. Julia itself is still too big to stack diagonally for a continuous support, unfortunately, so the shuttles are rather bounded and sparks unexposed. Using higher period endpoints increases the shuttle period; compare p140, p168 and p280 below:

FlutterWithKSparkler requested privately for further information on the higher-period oblique spaceships. So I am posting the vectors here, with group s for 660 clean cloverleaf pairs sorted by Δy and the group r for 13 T-ship making pairs:

I took a look at the (48,12)c/1500, and discovered that it is part of an infinite family with period (48,12)c/(1500+480n), n≥0. In terms of the formula for cloverleaf-push ships, we have N_t = 4 and N_v = 7+2n. They can be constructed by increasing the distance between the two halves by 120N cells. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only known infinite family of cloverleaf-push ships.

Per GUYTU6J's request, this post gathers some historical discussions related to the rule from Discord (to which their access is restricted) and offers a response to recent messages.

When FWKnightship published a p36960 OTCA metapixel in early 2022, it caught some attentions. Note that these were a few weeks before the release of fangtian and fangtian-2. Also note the saying of "two years later".

CGOL was explored with many discoveries long before modern search techniques. A similarly rich rule should be a goldmine for interesting discoveries. One of the closest examples of this is Glimmering Garden, which was explored largely by one person, yet they kept finding discovery after discovery. If you're rule is interesting enough for others to explore continuously, it should also be one you want to explore continuously.

[omitted code] The minpop is 121 for n = 0, and 119 for n ≥ 1.

In Glimmering Garden, GUYTU6J constructed a family of ships with speed (12T,3T)/(480 + 240V - 165T), where T is and V is an integer that describes how the component ships interact. Description and analysis begins here. I included this one with T=2, V=3 in my update. [omitted code] I ultimately decided to allow these because to the best of my knowledge, they haven't proved that there are infinitely many speeds of this form, based on their posts in the GG thread. Here are some more distinct speeds they presented in the thread: [omitted code]
GUYTU6J's first words in private correspondence went like this.
Sigh... Apparently LaundryPizza03 did not realize that the very first five-cloverleaf (3,12)c/795 spaceship has only 81 cells, and pulling the two halves apart by 120 cells would get a (3,12)c/1275 spaceship better than the 5S record. The statement 'they haven't proved that there are infinitely many speeds of this form' was also a big misunderstanding; n_V can be arbitrarily large, (2ΣΔx - ΣΔt) and ΣΔy are variable under some conditions in the posts, and the period formula was not derived only to describe a few known cases.
But then, they noted the count of 81 cells as unlikely minimal, and further look into the mathematical model became necessary. An analysis by us two users follows this post.

GUYTU6J suggested the description "[e+w] ping-pong", referring to an oblique spaceship where T-ship travels westbound from east terminal with e cloverleaves, and then eastbound from west terminal with w cloverleaves to complete a cycle. The very first (3,12)c/795 is thus a [3+2] ping-pong oblique spaceship. It uses a (-25, 9, -74) pair emitting westbound T-ship plus a plain (-31, 17, -110) pair for the east terminal, and a (-8, -18, 1) pair emitting eastbound T-ship for the west terminal.

It is known that there are two pairs emitting westbound T-ship, (-25, 9, -74) and (-33, 6, -68), and also two pairs emitting eastbound T-ship, (-8, -18, 1) and (-20, -19, -38). Using the only collision between westbound T-ship and cloverleaf that sets off displacement, it is found that the output lane from (-8, -18, 1) is 18 cells north to the input lane and from (-20, -19, -38) is 16 cells north. Both value are too large for the east terminal to allow for existence of a [2+2] ping-pong oblique spaceship. Hence, the smallest viable option is [3+2] ping-pong like the very first one. ([2+3] ping-pong may make it harder for T-ship to reach west terminal and set off displacement.)

Useful interactions between an eastbound T-ship and a cloverleaf have been enumerated previously.

Finally, when eastward, there are fifty.
The 50 interactions are summarized in the following pattern. A T-ship to set off displacement is marked with state 3 and 5 cells, and two phases of T-ship are separated and marked even and odd respectively. Moving the T-ship to align its state 5 cell with any of the state 2, 4, 6 cells on the left will put it on one of the locations in the previous enumeration. One location corresponds to one interaction. State 4 means a plain displacement after 240 ticks, three state 2 means an additional T-ship is reflected westbound in addition to displacement, and five state 4 means a delayed displacement after 480 ticks.

When the state 5 cell is set as origin, the coordinates for state 4 cells in even are
(-103, -12), (-116, -3), (-121, -2), (-120, -2), (-121, -1), (-120, -1), (-119, -1), (-118, -1), (-121, 0), (-120, 0), (-119, 0), (-115, 0), (-122, 1), (-121, 1), (-120, 1), (-121, 2), (-119, 2), (-120, 3), (-119, 3), (-120, 5), (-119, 5), (-119, 6), (-118, 7), (-116, 9)

respectively. The three state 2 cells are (-122, 0), (-119, 4) in even and (-122, 1) in odd. The five state 6 cells are (-130, -4), (-131, -2), (-131, 0), (-131, 2), (-128, 3) and occur exclusively in odd.

As a first experiment, a few [3+2] ping-pong oblique spaceships with one T-ship in the period are built with (-8, -18, 1) in west terminal and (-25, 9, -74) in east terminal, in which the interactions are (-103, -12), (-116, -3) in even.

For [3+2] ping-pong oblique spaceships, the Δy and (2Δx - Δt) of the plain pair in the east terminal is determined by both west and east terminals and the interaction. The constraint for (2Δx - Δt) is reduced to having a certain remainder modulo 4. An exhaustive enumeration for [3+2] ping-pong spaceships using one T-ship in a period, totaling 105 + 15 = 120, is tabulated in attachment.

As Glimmering Garden is arriving at its fifth anniversary, a real-life meetup with the person behind username GUYTU6J has been held, and some behind-the-scene matters, both subjective and objective, have been revealed. This is a summary post written with face-to-face collaboration.
  • How was the long rulestring estabilished?
The story began in the summer of 2019. During random rulegolfing in the space of isotropic non-totalistic rules, a novel reflectorless rotating oscillator with period 240 now called cloverleaf (xp240_27erb2) was spotted to occur commonly in the ash of soups, along with the small spaceship xq2_1b1 and some still lives. Soon, after variations on the Hensel notation, two more oscillators arose along with cloverleaf: one has period 28, now called Julia (xp28_8r93zxcc2457); and another has period 44, now called butterfly (xp44_e9jzxgom32zy4s8472zy916453).

All three oscillators show high volatility and strong sparks, so it was anticipated that notability of the rule could at least be guaranteed with periodic signal circuitry technologies, in which the small spaceship would be signal carrier and the oscillators would be the basis of devices. Using isorule.py, the rule with minimal non-totalistic birth and survival that can support the trio of oscillators could be found as B3-jknr4ity5ijk6i8/S23-a4city6c7c. This is the notation for computer simulations in Golly, LifeViewer, and other modern programs; admittedly it is long and hard to memorize.
  • What are the origins of the alias names in English and Chinese?
Only after ensuring sufficient notability of interest to the general audience should a rule be assigned an alias name, which is clearly the case here. A good naming scheme would be an adjective-and-noun phrase with alliteration. The overall feeling of this rule resemble blooming flora in a prolific garden, and the sparky, volatile dynamics suggest thinking about words themed on light with the common phonestheme "gl-". "Glimmer" was picked with inspiration from a fictional character named Starlight. Thus came forth "Glimmering Garden".

[Translation: The Chinese name "熠熠种花" (yì yì zhòng huā) was coined later. When listening to the background music "China - The Industrial Era" from Civilization VI, it suddenly came that the nickname "种花家" (zhòng huā jiā) corresponds to the mental image of garden in the rule Glimmering Garden, and the construction of patterns in the rule also reminds one of the historical process of industrialization of China, so the word "种花" (zhòng huā) was taken. Although it is originally the verb for "planting flower", here understanding it as an alternative noun for garden is fine too. And "熠熠" (yì yì) is from "星光熠熠" (xīng guāng yì yì), which is not only a word describing stars glowing, but also coincides with the Chinese name of the aforementioned character. In this way "熠熠种花" both sounds nice and forms a subtle pun, carrying the wish for future advancement.]
  • Is the rule living up to expectations?
It offers much more variety than the periodic technology initially envisioned, as the massive oscillator stamp collection can attest. Thanks to the development of abundant stable catalysts from simple tubs and boats to the complicated ones based on xs12_2523ad2 and beyond, proof of omniperiodicity, multiple growth rates and functional signal circuitry have been realized. As for the moving technology of spaceships, puffers and rakes, progress on (1,0)c/4, (3,0)c/20, (1,1)c/4 speeds and the unique (3,12) oblique direction have been fruitful, and other natural speeds are also investigated.

However, efforts remain to be made to cope with some inherent inconveniences. The common high-period oscillators and linear growth patterns demand long time for separation and identification in soup searching, in particular under the odd mirror symmetries. Lack of good frontends renders spaceship searching for unnatural speeds very difficult, even ones as simple as (1,0)c/3 and (1,1)c/5. The sheer amount of spaceship syntheses calls for extensive enumeration and careful post treatment comparable to Life before building a useful database. These are all challenges requiring hardcore operations.

I think the change is incorrect. This isn't a flipping oscillator, because it never evolves into a mirror image of itself.
Instead, it's a rotating oscillator, because at some point it evolves into a rotated copy of itself.
This is apparently consistent with intuitive meanings of words (especially when both 'rotating' and 'flipping' are used in the same context with distinct meanings), with the preceding post, and with pattern comments in Golly 4.3 pattern collection.

GUYTU6J sent me these two patterns to celebrate the holiday in China today. The first is a sparky oscillator with period 140, shown with a warm theme color.

Earlier this month, the largest known prime number is updated to 2^136279841-1, also known as M136279841. (The exponent could easily be a row in a standard 9x9 sudoku had one of the 1's be a 5.) A possible predecessor for the corresponding large prime oscillator has been built by yours truly, ahead of the one in Life, with a bounding box of 131076x93682.

It makes use of an extensible x4^n pulse divider and a gun rephaser.

In the construction, a driving period-524288 (2^19) shuttle gun is put in the south. When removing the spaceship in the shuttle and feeding another via southeast corner, it can be verified that the total population change in a pass is 1567343019-1499203108=68139911. Because each x4 pulse divider gets precisely one cell in the process, the total exponent of 2 is 68139911*2+19=136279841. After going through all the pulse dividers, the southbound spaceship reroutes the one in shuttle, effectively advancing it by 1 tick, and all is done.

For those who want a gun, insert this lane-keeping duplicator somewhere before the gun rephaser.

Code: Select all

#C [[ ZOOM 12 ]]

Edit: the former usage of phrase "period-quadrupler" in the context of prime periods has met criticism, which has now been redacted.
