A weird one of mine: the (largely universal) spelling "pavilion" — it just bothers me when the word is spelled with one L instead of two. And somehow the two-L spelling ("pavillion", the only sensible way to spell the word imo) is supposedly "obsolete" or whatever? IMO it contravenes the normal rules of English orthography to spell it with a single L... but whatever, I guess...

If anything, my "pet peeve" on this would be a certain kind of chitchat posts made mostly or solely for the sake of "generating activity". See viewtopic.php?f=3&t=6116#p166390 and the forum rules.

Activity does not magically make the forums a better place.

That is a dubious notion of "productive and interesting". A large fraction of chitchat is repetitive, and does not add any new knowledge or ideas on top of what could be already found by searching. I.e. nonproductive and uninteresting.

And I was talking about arbitrary activity that doesn't add some new knowledge or new ideas to the discussion. New ideas, new knowledge, new ways to look at something known, that indeed can be interesting.
But activity by itself does not magically make the forums a better place just because of increased amount of activity. Especially high-volume/low-effort/low-contribution activities don't make the forums a better place.

Also, when someone has a broken link in their signature and you click on the link and the requested topic does not exist.

When I have a great idea on how to complete a partial, put it down, and find that it doesn’t fit.
wherever I go on the internet I bring with myself nothing but problems.

There’s a bunch of misnamings of CGoL I’ve heard. One is in Chinese and roughly translates to “randomly moving things” and I also remember it being called “pixel art”.

Conway's Game of Life is not a game, despite the name. They're trying to make sure that Conway's Game of Life won't seem like a game, by avoiding using the word "game".

What I do dislike is that some person may be trying to invite more people to the forum or LifeWiki by revealing the answer to the CAPTCHA question.

My greatest pet peeve?

In the wiki, it is having my edits undone or made controversial without rhyme or reason.

(I will not refer to any user here - the focus is on the edits)

In the real world?

One particular student (not a user, so the rule does not apply here) who has been making mischief in my class from the first day (and annoyingly, ensuring nobody gets harmed so I cannot send them to discipline)
~ Haycat Durnak, a hard-working editor
Also, support Conway and Friends story mode!
I mean no harm to those who have tested me. But do not take this for granted.

Speaking about wiki edits, the edit https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?diff ... did=156716 incorrectly chains the terminology.

The word 'true' is part of the term 'true period' (as applied to guns whose mechanism works at the period of the output glider stream, and contrasted with 'pseudo period' guns whose mechanism works at a higher multiple of the period of the output glider stream).

Writing "... the only known true [[engine]]-based period-43 gun ..." amounts to incorrectly inserting one term ("engine-based") right in the middle of another term ("true period").

Pet peeve: logging onto the forums only to find new discussion occurring only on personally uninteresting threads.

Don't worry, this is not one of those threads - maybe.
Currently working to improve Life's guns and work on updating SKOPs and Isotropic rules most similar to B3/S23 to Life standards. Will get software to begin searches eventually.

Can you please explain the non-obvious connection between B4c and B8 in your recent edit?

On the face of it, the conditions B4c and B8 are two different fully specified, fully symmetric 3-by-3 configurations:

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 10, rule = LifeHistory
CDC$3D$CDC5$3C$CDC$3C!
#C [[ VIEWONLY GRID ]]
And the rules B4c and B8 are two different rules:

Code: Select all

x = 15, y = 12, rule = LifeHistory
7.F$CDC5.F3.3B$3D2.5F2.BCB$CDC5.F3.3B$7.F3$7.F$3C5.F3.3B$CDC2.5F2.BCB
$3C5.F3.3B$7.F!
#C [[ VIEWONLY GRID ]]
So besides the incorrect terminology currently used in the wiki page, there is apparently another error in the idea hidden behind the jargon.

There have been several violations of the "no posts about other users" rule (also, I probably should have said "other people" instead of "other users"). Thread locked.
