The objection would appear to be in separating that xs17_c4oa52z6ip construction offered as an example into two stages, when in all cases, as far as I could see, require the second stage after the first completes. Can you provide an example of a construction that only uses the first stage and doesn't require the removal of the Blinker?

Since that is the case, then what specifically is the advantage of breaking it into two stages? The only one I can see is because the deletion of the Blinker may not be optimal in some future, theoretical case.

Not in this specific case, but I have an example from the synthesis of (the spaceship) Kermit. An early step constructs xp2_sw32as0siczx311, which is xs19_32as0sicz311 plus a blinker. That still life can be constructed clean in 9G, same as the cost as the one with the extra blinker. However, that blinker is luckily positioned to be used in the activation step, is not in the way of any other step, and was cheaper than any other way to add the blinker back in.

I can imagine cases where that blinker would be instead directly converted into a ship, a loaf, a pond, a block, or a translated blinker (by a single glider). That could be cheaper than deleting the blinker and then constructing the needed object. I'm not sure whether any of those intermediate targets actually appears in some "interesting" construction, though.

edit: this "almost works" as a plausible example of a useful conversion that is cheaper than deleting the blinker and constructing the needed object:

Do you want to talk about problems?

Catagolue states that "Distinct components in the pattern must be separated by at least 20 blank columns or rows".
One of my first syntheses had more than 20 blank columns between gliders.
I tried to modify it to lower this count. Eventually I succeeded.
But then I noticed that other submitted syntheses have more than 20 blank columns of separation.
Next I submitted variant with larger spaces and it was accepted.
Distinct requirements does not refer to distinct gliders but instead to distinct stages. A glider that comes 150 generations or so after the other gliders in the same stage to delete a honey farm predecessor counts as part of the same stage as anything else involved in the reaction that created the honey farm predecessor because Catagolue can detect that it is used to modify the same initial object or constellation. Furthermore, anything that said glider passes within twenty rows and twenty columns of also counts as part of that same stage (as long as the glider was rewound far enough for Catagolue to see that), so it's very rare that staging syntheses maximally causes problems with Catagolue, and even when it does, Freywa has been willing to manually input sparse syntheses into Shinjuku when necessary, e.g., with xp53_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 (which is slightly staged so that it fits in LifeViewer, but I verified that there is at least one stage with a gap of 30 columns in the middle.

I don't understand the earlier "over one glider by stage" claim above, AFAIK single-glider stages (such as adding a boat-bit or a single-glider cleanup) are accepted too.
I meant over one glider per stage, and I have corrected that typo. The first stage requires at least two gliders, and any subsequent stage requires at least one glider, so the glider cost must always be strictly greater than the number of stages, i.e., more than one glider per stage.

A bit off topic: Can we say something about the statistics of #gliders necessary for n-bit still lives as n grows? For large n, I guess the majority is not synthesizable at all. But still, I would be interested in any conjectures how #gliders distributes for given n.

I think universal construction gives a somewhat boring answer: either the target is not constructible at all, or constructible with at most 15 gliders. To get "practically interesting" statistics, one would need to decide how to exclude such enormously large syntheses.

Related, I like the idea that one can expect a solution when there are no local obstructions that prevent it. Maybe that could work for syntheses too. Could there be a theorem saying "if a still life does not contain any of the following forbidden subpatterns, then it is glider-constructible"?

You are of course right. The question as posed doesn't make sense given universal construction. How about #glider that can construct the target still life in less than 100000 generations. Or some other threshold beneaththe billions of steps the RCT needs.

Concerning your idea with the forbidden subpatterns, that is very interesting. My intuition is that with growing size the number of non-constructible still lifes grows, equally to the number of GOEs. But it is hard to develop an intuition for really big patterns.

I've been following the progress of the experimental side of this question with a lot of interest over the years -- have wondered whether the "N-bit still life synthesis projects" might actually start running into more candidates for "difficult structures" or "forbidden structures", as N increases.

We've only gotten up to N=22 so far, and we'd have to get to N=184 before we know for sure that we'd hit an unsynthesizable still life. There's going to be some kind of huge difficulty shift somewhere between those two numbers. But it seems like we have no idea yet whether that shift will be gradual or sudden, or where on the number line that shift will happen.

Definitely at N=22 we've started to see a larger proportion of still lifes with a delicately balanced central area -- where it's difficult to make small incremental changes to the outside of the still life while maintaining the conditions that prevent the center from collapsing. For N much lower than 20 or so, you might say that there isn't really room for an inaccessible center.

It seems like the proportion of "accessible" to "inaccessible" area in still lifes of population N ... might be something that could be roughly calculated, at least as far up as N=34 (until we do some more enumerating and counting).

I messed up, the 44-bitter isn't 16G, but 18G, because i miscounted the number of glider (or smth)
Edit help: I MESSED UP THE PATTERN WHAT IS WRONG WITH M-

So I was looking at one of the syntheses, and I realized that one of them has quadrants that eventually stabilize one another, but one individually can alternatively be stabilized using fast components and such. Could the object in question, along with its stabilizing components, be syntesized by itself, apart from any symmetry? Pictured left is the earliest recognizable version of it, while right is its descendent being stabilized:

Code: Select all

x = 24, y = 14, rule = B3/S23

o3bo$bobobo13bobo$4bo14bo$bo20bo$21b3o$20b4o$19bobo$20bo!
Furthermore, would this result in a glider reduction in any syntheses, if not be one itself when completed?

EDIT: The resulting still life has, in fact, shown up in a soup on catagolue, albeit one that gives much less guidance to a supposed synthesis. It does not have a synthesis listed.
Helloshe, I like pentadecathlons and small-period motifs.
I may not be very skilled in search programs, but I have many ideas.
Soli Deo Gloria!
