Unfortunately, the second glider destroys the far eater and isn't eaten or sent through if the boat isn't there (no first glider.) Can this be rectified?

There is an almost-working solution, with a leftover blinker. The blinker will absorb either one or two "slow" gliders depending on the timing (a hitting glider will either delete the blinker or convert it into a block which will be deleted by the next glider):

By the way, is it worth searching down this route for a potential glider reflector / G-to-X? (or has it already been searched)?

That doesn't look like a familiar starting point to me, so if someone has explored that space I don't think they've said much about it.

There's a decent number of ticks before the re-oriented pi starts interfering with the initial catalyst, and a fair amount of room to put catalysts on both sides of the incoming glider lane. With the range of SPEBOEs that could possibly be restored to that location, it does seem like it could be worth cranking up the various search tools and giving this one a shot -- maybe especially hunting for additional transparent objects for the reaction to pass through away from the initial location, as mvr has been able to do with beehives recently.

I realized that my attempts at building a versatile channel for period 60 PI crawlers is unnecessary.

We can build a 3c/10 helix directly using the PI crawling rakes I have already shown.

The following idea shows the basic method (but creating loafs instead of spaceships).

Any final spaceship has to create lots of rows of blocks and boats for a complete helix to be built, and the result will be very wide. But an
efficient fanout mechanism for creating them from the helix's output might be possible.

EDIT:

The tracks for the PI crawlers can be aligned to form a grid with only some loss of flexibility. This might be useful when constructing the tracks since they are aligned and repetitive.

Perhaps temporary puffers could be created to run horizontally to create them until the puffers are destroyed at the right edge by upwards spaceships.

I think that the grid can produce gliders on half of the possible lanes. (Anyone want to verify this?)
This might be good enough to do the needed constructions for the helix, and if not maybe tricks like kick-backs could be done.

EDIT 2:

First, the pattern above had a layout problem which I have corrected.

Second, the backward rake is not necessary since a backward rake can be synthesized from a forwards rake whose output hits a PI climber. This uses a few more support rows and PI climbers than the previous version, but if we can already create many support rows then the extra ones don't matter. More importantly, only one orientation of a boat has to be used for the rakes, so the grid is simpler to construct.

Once again, I am not sure which lanes the output gliders can be sent on.

EDIT 3:

The idea of using horizontal puffers to create the block trails won't work. There obviously is no time to build a new row before the PI crawlers have consumed one.

So the trails will have to be built piecemeal, from a helix output which is far above them and raining results downward.

I think that will be a pretty hard problem to solve.

The one-time turner reaction (where the first of those two gliders hits the boat, a 90-degree glider is produced, and the boat is destroyed) was known long ago; see for example demultiplexer.

That 1G + boat -> 1G reaction produces a visible spark. It seems a "natural path of exploration" to try to use that spark for some purpose. Your 2G + boat -> 2G reaction can be seen as one such way to use the spark.

I do not know whether anyone noticed this specific reaction before, though. I would be interested to see how it could be used in some larger construction. The two hitting gliders have to arrive on specific lanes and have to be precisely timed relative to each other; the resulting two gliders also leave on fixed non-adjustable lanes with fixed non-adjustable timing; that is likely to be a significant restriction on how the reaction could be "used in practice".

Maybe someone can configure the Life Viewer to see the reaction run indefinitely. It might be large though, since adjacent PI crawlers are separated by one generation.

The new block rows are shifted by 3 cells horizontally and 2 cells vertically. With enough rows of PI crawlers the blocks can be restored to their original location.

I think this works, although certainly can be made much smaller. It is a high-period oscillator in a "shifted torus" finite universe, and is intended to be viewed in Golly.

Seems like 288 rows of pi crawlers would move the blocks (3*288,2*288) = (864,576), where both numbers are multiples of the (32,18) block agar unit of repetition. EDIT: Fixed the numbers above. That would allow for a very large unshifted torus.

We could get away with just one row of pi crawlers if Golly supported doubly twisted tori, like this:

Every now and then there's a suggestion to support doubly twisted tori. I haven't tried looking around in bounded-grid source code yet; is there a reason why that would be particularly difficult to implement?

Something that I think _would_ be tricky to implement would be the triply twisted torus required to simulate this agar with only a single pi-heptomino and a few blocks. The pi copies to the left and right have to be moved one tick forward and one tick backward in time, respectively.

To support this more generally, either the RLE format would have to be adjusted to specify multiple successive generations of the base patch (depending on how large the "time twist" is associated with each dimension) ... or if only one phase of the base patch was specified, that could be taken to imply that the other phases can be safely generated from the initial phase -- i.e., no edge effects between neighboring time-twisted copies could occur for the first N ticks. That could certainly be arranged easily enough for this particular example.

If I'm counting correctly, then the following attempted "doubly twisted torus" needs a 74-by-74 torus to emulate.

The (intended to be infinite) arrangement of R-pentominoes repeats with displacements (dx=11, dy=1) and (dx=3, dy=7). Note that 74 x 74 = 2 x 2 x 37 x 37 isn't divisible by either of numbers 11, 3, 7. There are 74 "clones" of the R-pentomino (and it looks like every cell has 74 "clones" across the 74-by-74 torus, so that there are only 74 cells not counting the "clones").

Therefore I'm curious, how are you going to represent this with a smaller rectangular RLE pattern (that would presumably include precisely one "clone" of the R-pentomino and precisely one "clone" of every cell)? The only rectangles with area 74 seem to be 37-by-2 and 74-by-1.

However, it seems like possibly the requirement of "one clone of every cell" might actually not be necessary, depending on the implementation. Could we maybe try to support doubly-twisted torus forms that would be much more user-friendly to look at -- showing one visible copy of the R-pentomino?

Would have to think a lot about whether there might be a way to support that. If we can't assume a rectangular base tile, we'd have to supply two non-parallel vectors giving offsets to nearby copies, exactly as you did with your description of displacements (dx=11, dy=1) and (dx=3, dy=7).

The other thing that I've always thought would be an improvement would be to have an option to display torus universes in a different way. We currently get a view of just the one rectangle, with a bounding box and blank space around it -- you have to fill in the repeating copies using your imagination. Wouldn't it be easier to understand what's going on in a lot of cases if the repeating copies were actually displayed -- maybe in a slightly faded-out color, so that it's visibly obvious how the edge and corner interactions work, but it's also clear that only one tile is the actual editable one?

Among other things, that would make it possible to actually inspect the above 74x1 pattern and see the R-pentominoes.

It may be unnecessary to require that only one tile is editable. One could allow editing anywhere in the visible region, but enforce consistency (i.e. enforce the specified translation symmetries) so that all "clones" of a cell are updated whenever the user edits the pattern (or when a script changes the pattern).

Absolutely. I guess I was thinking more of highlighting a single tile somehow, just so that it was easy to see what the unit of repetition was.

Edit-anywhere, with all clones updating simultaneously, would really be a nice addition to that.

The large still life you described is cis-mirrored dove. Check the wiki before posting.

To (attempt to) find out more about that 18-bit still life, you can select it, copy it and paste the RLE into the form in the following page:

EDIT by dvgrn: Just to do some quick feedback here: @LittleLWSS, these are all good experimental patterns for you to build.

However, more experiments along these lines won't really fit into "unsure discoveries". Most people on the forums has assembled these types of patterns at one time or another, but they generally don't post them. There are literally millions of puffers that can be constructed, for example, most of them just about equally interesting. We can't post them all one by one, so we only post the ones that are really unusual in some way.

As you start building more complicated puffers and rakes, they might go better in the Construction practice thread.
