Traffic stop is a small catalyst found by cvojan on December 14, 2021.[1] When certain objects hit the catalyst in the correct way, a blinker turns into a block, and the entire three quarters traffic light constellation turns into a phi spark. The fishhook turns it back into a traffic light and then eats one of the four blinkers, making it the original three quarters traffic light again.
Its recovery time is 36 ticks, and it only works at even periods due to the blinkers. However, odd-period sparkers (e.g. 104P9) can still be used with it.[2]
It has been used to create the smallest form of the p76 pi-heptomino hassler,[3] the smallest period-36[4] and period-46 glider guns,[5] and, most notably, the first period-38 oscillator.[6]
The traffic stop catalyst ranked third place in the Pattern of the Year 2021 competition on the ConwayLife.com forums, tied with DOGun SaGaQR, and behind Goldtiger997's self-synthesizing oblique loopship and reflectorless rotating oscillator constructions.[7]
