Rattlesnake is a period-11 oscillator (so named because it has 11 letters and a snake for a rock[1]) found by Dean Hickerson in a drifter search on January 10, 2016.[2] In terms of its 33 cells, it is currently tied for the smallest known period 11 oscillator with diamondback. It gives two dot sparks, one on the right and one on the left, and this allows the construction of non-trivial higher-period oscillators as seen in the next section.
Martin Grant found a 37-glider synthesis of this oscillator no later than January 13, 2016.[3] Tanner Jacobi improved the synthesis of the base still life by four gliders in April 2021.[4] More reduction has since brought the cost down to 25 gliders (see the Catagolue-generated synthesis RLE in the infobox).
LCM oscillators
The LCM oscillators below are listed due to being the smallest known ones by population, while also satisfying the condition that at least one cell oscillates at the full period. The oscillators are shown with visible envelopes, to highlight interactions between subpatterns.
