Merzenich's p64 (or 4 blocks hassling 2 beehives and 2 R-pentominoes) is the smallest known period-64 oscillator, and was discovered by Matthias Merzenich on October 30, 2010.[1]

Two copies of this oscillator are seen in the period-64 pre-pulsar shuttle, constructed by Merzenich with the help of praosylen on June 20, 2015.[2]

A 14-glider synthesis of this oscillator was found by Ian07 on August 9, 2019,[3] which was improved to 10 gliders by Goldtiger997 the next day.[4]

The oscillator first appeared semi-naturally on February 12, 2022, in a soup by Charity Engine.[5] Since then, about 1 in 7×1010 soups in the correct symmetry (C2_1) form a Merzenich's p64 in the centre.

The active region in Merzenich's p64 ranks 31st in the list of common evolutionary sequences, and the region is identified as belonging to Merzenich's p64 rather than having a distinct name.
