53P13 is a period-13 oscillator discovered by Bullet51 in a drifter search on August 7, 2015.[1] It has a tiny spark that is capable of eating gliders from a p52 Herschel track, as seen in the p13-assisted period-52 glider gun.
A 219-glider synthesis for a stator variant of this oscillator was discovered by Martin Grant on November 2, 2015. This stator variant is smaller; it has 50 cells.[2]
Two hours after initial discovery, Matthias Merzenich found that 53P13 can interact with a period-2 component to give 87P26, an LCM oscillator, as shown below.[3] In terms of its minimum population of 87 cells, it was the smallest known non-trivial period 26 oscillator until the discovery of 70P26 in 2022.
