A stable "glider-to-chaos" mechanism was discovered in November 2023 , based on a partial result by Mitchell Riley.[ 1]
The base reaction involves a transparent bait block , a transparent beehive , an eater 1 and a large catalyst, and produces a certain "pi+block" collision as output (with a leftover beehive that can be suppressed).
Shortly after discovery, several stable reflectors [ 1] [ 2] [ 3] [ 4] [ 5] [ 6] and conduits [ 1] [ 7] [ 4] [ 8] [ 9] were completed with this mechanism as the first stage.
The "instant disappearance" repeat time (assuming the output pi+block is removed as soon as it forms) is 90 ticks; several known completions keep the same repeat time.

A beehive factory with toggle functionality[ 11] (click above to open LifeViewer )
This beehive factory has the property of being a safe toggle switch. A second glider following on the same input lane will cleanly destroy the beehive created by the previous glider. The state of the toggle can be read by sending a glider on any of several perpendicular transparent lanes, so that the glider cleanly deletes the beehive if it is present but passes through if the beehive is absent. (A block factory with similar toggle functionality is shown in Speed tunnel#Glider-to-block .)
